Safely Using the Computer and Internet While In Recovery From a Porn Addiction

In a perfect world, there is somewhere safe to go after you quit porn addictions, however, the reality of it is, you most likely will have to continue using your computer and the internet. If you had a porn addiction that was primarily accessed through the computer, how do you safely continue to work and/or search with the internet and not be drawn back into the addiction? It is common for thoughts to drift back in time and lose your thoughts to the hours spent in a chat room or clicking through pornographic material, the time where you thought you were in control of your life. Now, you have sought help for your addiction to porn and are in recovery, but there is no possible way to avoid the computer. There are several strategies that can be used to help you safely search the internet without letting your thoughts wander to the sites that can cause you to relapse.

Reroute Your Thoughts

An alcoholic or a drug addict can choose to avoid their addiction of choice by not buying drugs/alcohol, not visiting the nightclubs or the places where they know that drugs or alcohol is readily available. It is the same with a porn addiction; you have to choose to avoid your addiction. You have to train your mind that your addiction is not the computer; the addiction is how you used the computer. It is basically like starting from the beginning, as though you have never used a computer before, you have to learn what is safe, what isn’t safe and what sites are not appropriate. You must keep in mind that you have come this far, you had the strength to quit porn and you have the strength to continue addiction free.

Tips to Avoid Porn Sites

The following are a few excellent tips that will help you use the computer, search websites and continue to remain free from your porn addiction:

  • Schedules are vital for a porn addict. It is too easy to access your addiction at any time of the day or night, so you have to make a schedule for your time on the computer and stick to it. It will be easy to lose yourself while searching sites or playing games and you may find that you want to stray over to a favorite porn site, just for a minute…as soon as you even consider going to a site where you should not be, get up from the computer.
  • Only allow yourself small amounts of time on the computer, start off small with only 15 or 20 minutes then increase your time by 5 minutes every three days. Set an oven timer next to the computer and use it.
  • Find a hobby that has nothing to do with the computer, the internet or other modern devices. Take up fishing, bicycling or find a charity that you are passionate about. It is important that your mind not be on the internet, your porn addiction or anything relating to your addiction. When you have an urge to visit a porn site, leave your home and go for a walk or to a local group meeting. You have to train yourself to avoid the temptation and the easiest way to do this is by temporarily removing yourself from the site of your computer.
  • The first few months of recovery from your porn addiction, will be the most difficult. It is often hard to stay positive, but you have come this far and you can make it through the rest of your journey. Invest in a good book with affirmations, read one and memorize one each day. Believe in yourself, trust yourself and avoid any negative thoughts about yourself.

Find Your Strength

It is important that you know you are not alone, thousands of others before you have had an addiction to porn and overcome it. If you do not have a good support system with family or friends, find a local support group as soon as possible. The group you participate in does not necessarily have to be a group for recovering porn addicts. A support group understands all addictions and will provide you with the tools necessary to learn the positive things about yourself. Believe in yourself, trust yourself and you can get through your addiction and learn to live a happy, healthy and addiction free life.
